"Sucker" by The Jonas Brothers - Single Review

Full disclosure: while never the biggest fan of The Jonas Brother during their early years, following the recent solo careers of Nick, and Joe Jonas with band DNCE, has certainly peaked my interest ahead of the trio’s newsworthy reunion.

Following a six-year hiatus, Nick and Joe, alongside oldest brother Kevin, cement their official return with the release of “Sucker”, a track of pure adoration and infatuation carried by subtle rock instrumentals and an infectious whistle-heavy chorus. Reported to have kept the reunion a secret “for almost seven, eight months”, the new effort effectively combines the artistic influences of both Nick and Joe Jonas’ solo trajectories, while updating the band’s trademark pop/rock stylings.

Co-written with hitmaker Ryan Tedder, “Sucker” finds Nick and Joe trading lead vocalist duties as both sing of changing their ways to please an important significant other. Instead of dancing on top of cars and drunkenly stumbling out of bars, the boys do not seem to mind following the orders of their ladies now that each have found a forever love.

Six years can result in a great deal of growth. That idea of maturity is emphasized on the release. While foolish antics and temporary relationships might have worked when each member was in their early twenties, priorities change when true romances alters course. “I am a sucker for all the subliminal things, no one knows about you, about you, and you're making the typical me break my typical rules, it's true, I'm a sucker for you,” the brothers admits on the radio-ready chorus.

The song is an authentic continuation of what the brothers set out to accomplish and create when tracks such as “Pom Poms” and “First Time” were released in 2013. “Sucker” though is easily more contagious and meaningful. Likely composed as a love letter to real-life partners, to Kevin’s wife Danielle, Nick’s wife Priyanka Chopra, and Joe’s fiancé Sophie Turner, there’s more emotional weight and internal understanding buried underneath smooth vocal performances and carefree songwriting.

Adding to the thrill of The Jonas Brothers reuniting is the release of the accompanying music video to support “Sucker”. Filmed at a mansion in England, alongside each of their significant others, the visual finds all enjoying life in an Alice in Wonderland-type aesthetic. After a bit of manual labor, all treat themselves to a tea party and a relaxing bubble bath before things take a turn for the steamy and sensual.

In the end, "Sucker" turns out to be a successful and honest family affair.
